Finding your true north

To get to the North Pole or “True North” just following the needle on a compass won’t work, it will take you to magnetic north. In order to find True North, you would have to use other navigational tools. In business the definition of true north, is often defined as a “fixed point in a spinning world.”  A helpful metaphor to help us proceed on the correct course or in the right direction. In 2020 most of us will be facing change, life decisions, work decisions, relationship decisions, health decisions are all part of a new course that we are trying to plot. Are we feeling some trepidation or feeling of uncertainty for what lies ahead? Are we entering unchartered waters? Do we need to reflect on what is true? How to stay grounded? Do we always trust our own judgement? I am pioneering something different, not something new. This particular compass has …

Combatting stress in a competitive world

Now back from the States, I found myself walking in Richmond Park for the first time in about 10 years. South west London used to be my home and I would spend many joyful hours with my dog, running cycling and walking, a great decompression at the end of the working day. Being here again felt nostalgic and good, with friends and in a familiar space. At first all was well, however, very quickly I started to feel anxious, energetically anxious, on edge, my gut told me something was wrong. America has a deep history of pioneering and globally impactful inventions, from Thomas Edison’s electric lightbulb in 1879 to Wright’s aeroplane in 1903, or indeed Microsoft in 1975. After my summer months spent in Colorado I acknowledged that once again they appear to be further advanced in their understanding of how the natural world can impact the world of business. The time I spent in Colorado really opened my eyes as to the receptiveness in the States to new and revolutionary ideas, in a way that is only at the beginning of its journey here in the United Kingdom. The use of nature, NQ (The Nature Factor), our instincts (N-Stinctive Intelligence) is the missing fourth pillar of the SQ, IQ and EQ formula for success in business and in life. The States may be more perceptive to this idea because their land is so vast and in many ways untamed. …

From the meadow to the Rodeo

From the meadow to the Rodeo

I’m currently stateside developing relationships with clients, trainers and honing my own leadership skills further. In week one I found myself attending a Rodeo. Having never been to a Rodeo before, I felt hesitant, however, I do not want to use this blog post to get into an ethics debate around the topic. Whatever one’s views are on this matter, there are powerful business analogies to be drawn from this experience.  My friend and I witnessed and recognised first and foremost the tremendous courage shown by all the participants in this highly tense, energised and dangerous arena of conflicting energies. In business we need courage in order to create, to create something new and to succeed. It is never too early to hone and master this courage.  Not only did we see volumes of courage being spun around this dusty arena, but also extraordinary levels of skill, particularly by the …
